Nitrogen is used in various processing of the metal industry such as in steel rolling, continuous casting, powder metallurge, magnetic material sintering and many more. Numerous sources of nitrogen exist during the melting, ladle processing, casting, cutting and shaping operations of steel manufacturing, such as :

  • As purging gas for pipeline purging
  • Coolant in the dry quenching of hot coke, cooling gas in the blast furnace top
  • Carrier gas for pneumatic conveying of pulverized coal or other combustible materials
  • Inert gas in galvanization process.
  • As protective gas for the annealing of the cold rolled steel. Annealing is a heat treatment process used mostly to increase the ductility and reduce the hardness of a material.
  • As protective gas during laser cutting, welding and brazing purposes, safeguarding against oxidation
  • Liquid nitrogen is used for shrink fitting.

Nitrogen use in steel manufacturing also improve steel strength and toughness properties, corrosion resistance and austenite-stabilization
